Making the decision to adopt a cat is a big decision to undertake but might be the most rewarding decision you can make. Here is a list of pros and cons to help process the thinking of adopting a cat yourself.

Cons

Cats may require moderate care compared to that of a dog there is still a significant undertaking in adopting a cat. You need to be able to commit time to cleaning, feeding, and playing with your new cat and provide it with a happy and loving environment which takes time but is the essential responsibility of the pet owner when making the decision to adopt a cat or other pet.

Do you travel or leave the house and the cat alone? Cats can be fine for a while but should not be neglected if you leave for the entire day every day depending on its personality.

Some people have allergies and may react to cat’s fur or dander. This is something to think about before making a long term decision like owning a cat.

If you have children you want to be careful that the cat you plan on getting interacts well with your children. Not all cats do. Behavioral interactions make a big difference in the overall happiness of your cat. Frequent visitors should also be monitored while spending time with your new cat to be sure all the pieces of your life will fit together.

If you have other pets you also want to have a period of time to monitor the relationships of your home as they develop. Characters conflict at times and need to be tested out to be sure that long term coexistence can be achieved.

Pros

As stated in the first con cats are less maintenance than other pets. Cats can be trained to use a litter box and be complete indoors which is a great advantage over most dogs which cannot be trained so easily.

Cats are a low tech activity and relationship that are the perfect break from computers, television, and cell phones. Playing with your newly adopted cat can give you a chance to enjoy the simpler things in life.

When you adopt a cat from a shelter you are saving a life. Many cats are euthanized everyday when they are not adopted or abandoned. You can save a life when you make the decision to adopt a cat.

When you are making the decision to adopt a cat you bring in a new loving family member for a long time. I am making this decision to after carefully thinking through the process.

Thanks for this, I want to add that Adoption is when you get a pet from a pet shelter.. otherwise you are "buying" a pet or taking somebodies free pet - and neither of those are "adoptions"

I love cats and they make the best pets. Good for you in going forward to adopt one or two.

Thanks for the comments, any advice for where or how to get a cat to sleep through the night? I think she is trying to get familiar with her new environment.
